Deep Dive

My thought during this week landed among-

How do we find what’s under the surface?

We often either have to change the position or the outlook.

As I put on goggles to go scuba diving, I noted the equipment I noted the steps.

Above all else, I noted the posture.

I would not have been able to see what I saw from the boat

I had to not only get out of the boat, but had to descend into the water - I had to get low.

To go to the depths to see the life, the fish that is bestowed in the water, I needed the right gear, and I needed the right posture

When you are in an aquarium, to see the fish within the water, you have to change the elevation of the ground you are walking on, or the architects had to create a way for you to see.

Typically, the ground lowers, and there is a decline in the surface for you to see the fish that live within the water. The position changes.

And also the glass tank allows us to see into the deeper surface. This changes the lens.

In the same way, we have to get low to see what’s on the inside of our hearts.

How do we get low? We change our posture and we find the outlook that finds meaning In the moments

  • We ask questions that wrestle and cheer on the deepest parts of our souls

  • We go deeper with one another to see what is on the inside of us

  • And we will begin to see what needs to be pulled out

  • We adjust the lens of this life to find meaning in all things- it is there, we just have to search in the depths

So often, we are looking for the sources that feed our souls, but living a life above the water.

The fish are in the water.

We must change our posture, our position, to get to the deepest parts of ourselves

This requires vulnerability; this requires more meaningful conversations

There is a step in between each for a particular reason

In scuba diving, when you go low, you also have to adjust your ears to acclimate.

You have to equalize your ears every couple of minutes as you change the depth.

So in the same way, when we go low, we have to adjust our hearts to also go deeper.

So when we look at the depth of our hearts, we also have to prepare our minds, our thoughts.

To go low and not change your heart can create a hardened heart.

To go low and not change your thoughts can create an anxious mind.

So today, I encourage us all to go low into the deeper parts of us- Living lives that are bold and courageous, meaningful and steadfast.

When we see what’s underneath, two things are required--- the position of our hearts and the lens through which we see.

When you snorkel, you have to put on the right lens.

When you are in the aquarium, the glass wall makes a way for you to see.

As I was on the ocean floor, I looked, and soon enough I was swimming amongst a school of fish alongside me.

Throughout our trip, my cousins had been so excited to show me parrotfish. A fish that glows with colors, a fish that radiates. It is truly the brightest fish I saw while we were there.

I recognized their color from the surface of the boat. Although I truly got to see the colors radiate from the depths of the ocean floor

The goggles allowed a clearer lens and the posture allowed me to be on the same position- I needed both

I think this is how our lives may appear as well

We often shine bright and boldly

Now it is in the depths of ourselves, we really see the truest parts of ourselves radiate even more

When you encounter Christ, you put on your new self

A new lens is given as the scales fall off

A new perspective is gained when the posture of our hearts are now aligned with His

He comes to the depths of our hearts, our minds, our souls

He is renewing and transforming these parts of me, daily

It is a daily surrender that I may not look the same as I grow

This is a daily devotion to grow + to align my posture with His

In order to grow a garden, the seeds have to be planted underneath

In order to grow, there needs to be depth

When we try to stay above the water, we don’t see what’s underneath. We have to be submerged; we have to change our position

The time is now to live a more meaningful life with the people who surround us

We all have stories to tell + sometimes we just need to listen + share the deeper parts

The posture we hold is a choice, and going deep may be scary

It takes time, it takes additional effort

Here are some great ways to start

-      Ask 1 person today how they are doing (I mean really doing)

-      Ask yourself how you are doing- how are you really doing?

-      When you go to bed tonight, ask yourself what made your soul feel alive today

  • When you come up with that answer, do more of that!

-      Be intentional with people in your office

-      Be intentional with the people in your family

What Lessons can be brought from today?

Check in, create space, lean in

I am always surprised by what I learn, what perspective I see

For us to see deeper into this life, we must change the way we see.

Let’s focus the lens differently, change the position, create time, and create space to go deeper today.

When we encounter Christ, we are changed, grown, and called deeper

We come as we are, we leave differently

May we lead with Intentionality and depth

With lots of love,

Makenna
